Singapore BienNale 2011 – Contemporary Art Exhibition

This is not the first time Singapore had actually exhibited the arts work of about 60 artists from 30 different countries. You can click here to find out more about it, here. However this is the first time we actually went and spend our whole Sunday here. Mainly, the reason is, we do not think Miza is ready for contemporary art as yet. Now she is 6, with a good preparation prior of going to the exhibition can help her somehow to appreciate the exhibition and the installment that are there. We rather go to Fine art for her exposure, it is plainly beautiful and far from being absurd :p

What I did was actually go the main page for the biennale which is i copied above for all of you. there is a section for student activities right there, and it is divided into primary level and secondary level. what i did, i printed that out and give a glance of it prior of actually going there. And while we are in the train heading to the museum i brief her a bit, what is the exhibition all about. On the activity papers there are actually some introduction of the artist background and their work as well as some pictures of the exhibition and installations. She did show some interest to actually see the exhibition herself after my explanation.

True enough! at the museum she was busy completing the task given from the activity papers. It is indeed helping her to understand the exhibition better. And everytime we finish one place I always ask her to pick the best exhibition that she likes and give me the reason why. Off course, there is no right and wrong about it … art appreciation is very subjective, it is up to her to come up with her own preference. And so far we had a lot in common.

we started the visit by going to the National Museum, from all the exhibition here, we like the water city done by Tiffany Chung. She built models of houses and garden floating on the water. we like the installation as well as the idea behind it. She came up with this idea foreseeing the global warming in the future, when the water level increase it is always a good idea to have a floating city at the end. click here for some of her works that was blogged by TICKLE BLOG.

the next destination is the Singapore Museum of Art. A lot of the exhibition here are not age appropriate for Miza so we just spend a few stop here. One of the most interesting part here is the fridge exhibition. It is actually interesting to find out how people are organizing their fridge. this exhibition is done by Roslisham Ismail. He did this based on his observation of his own experience of staying with 6 different family. You can actually see how those 6 fridges are actually different, from the things that were inside and how it was organized. Interesting! click here to read the blog about it.

our next stop was the old kalang airport. most of the installation here artists from the west. Honestly! it is very difficult to appreciate LOL. It is a bit confusing, totaly absurd and far from my taste LOL. The only thing we enjoy here really, the exhibition of drawing done by Singapore PRimary and Secondary school, other than that … we keep skipping one installations to another …. Miza enjoyed the creative works here, she made her own badges as well as get the drawing done on her hand.

The last and the most fun part was going to merlion hotel … it was done by the Japanese Artist. he actually covers the Merlion and turn it into a hotel and some visitors had actually spend the night there. all they need to do is to pay $150 per night for a couple to spend the night there. It was a nice victorian style hotel room with a beautiful view of Singapore river and Marina Bay Sands.
